  Lots of coffee may ward off Alzheimer's, USF finds

  Regular drip-brewed coffee, and plenty of it, delivers two ingredients that appear to work together as a powerful defense against Alzheimer's disease, according to a mouse study at the Byrd Alzheimer's Institute in Tampa. One of those ingredients is caffeine; the other remains a mystery. University of South Florida researchers said Tuesday their work could help explain findings that four to five cups of coffee a day, consumed in middle age, seem to ward off development of the memory-destroying affliction. Their study results will be published next week in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

  One hot Saturday morning, a group of 70 descended on the grounds of the Cavite State University (CavSU) in Indang, Cavite to take part in a tree planting activity. To be planted were 700 seedlings of liberica, a variety of coffee known for its strong taste and pungent odor and locally referred to as barako, after the wild boar that loved to feast on the tree’s leaves and fruits. Leading the group was Chit Juan, chief executive officer of the Figaro Coffee Co. and among the group were Figaro employees and many individuals – all coffee lovers. Before going out to the plot CavSU has set aside for the activity, Dr Alejandro Mojica, head of the university’s research and extension arm, gave an orientation. “We collected strains of liberica from the provinces that grow it – Batangas, Bataan, Cavite, Davao and Capiz.
